The client brief for this garden design was for a cottage garden, incorporating an existing water feature, trampoline and vegetable plot. Although the clients have a child I did not have to provide a play area in the main garden, hence I could keep grass to a minimum allowing larger flower beds to be built. The modern design of the clients house didn’t fit with the traditional cottage garden look. Therefore I plucked for a modern take on a cottage garden, by restricting the colour palette to pinks/whites/purples/blues and using a modern building material - the light blue slate, for the hard landscaping. By adding a pergola it not only provided instant height to the garden but it will also provide a screen between the house and the trampoline as over time the climbers planted at the base will cover the structure.
There are a large number of traditional cottage garden perennials in this design i.e. Dahlias, foxgloves and echinacea, but around the perimeter of the garden I have used shrubs such as hydrangea and flowering red currants to give the plan a structure. Surrounding the banana bench I have planted night scented flowers, such as phlox, to enhance the clients experience of the garden when it is most likely to be in use (when they return home from work in the evening).
Hannah did a brilliant job planning and re-modelling our back garden.
The garden now
looks beautiful and even the plan is a work of art, we are getting that framed too
so we know what all the plants are.
Great work Hannah, thank you.
